I only have wonderful things to say about Dongaemun Hwa Shin Hostel.

First off, receiving detailed instructions via email – with photos – on how to get to the hostel once was very considerate. This was sent to me by the hostel right after my booking in Agoda was confirmed.

Second, when our flight got delayed, we contacted the owner immediately upon arriving at Incheon and got a response immediately. The owner of the hostel stayed up late so that my friend and I could still check-in.

Third, the staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. They gave us maps and city guides for us to traverse Seoul city with ease. I also love the fact that the hostel feels very homely.

HOSTEL CONDITION
– Rooms were always left clean and tidy (requested)
– Each room has a flat-screen TV and a split type AC
– The hostel seemed like it was newly renovated

GUEST SERVICES
– Free laundry services on the ground floor near the reception area
– Reliable WiFi in all rooms including the shared kitchen and lobby
– Toiletries are provided by the hostel (Shampoo, towels and etc.)
– Multiple languages spoken: English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese

A few things to take note of:

  • The hostel doesn’t have an elevator. Although the front desk staff will carry your luggages when you check-in, it’s not always a guarantee that someone will help you carry them when you check-out. So request the lowest floor available.
  • The walls of the hostel rooms are quite thin so noise from the hotel guests next room or chatter in the corridor can be heard. You will see signs inside the hostel to keep the noise down from 11 pm onwards.
  • The hostel is located inside an alley of a Russian/Eastern European neighbourhoodwhich some of you may find dubious (and I totally understand that), but it is safe. There are CCTVs around the area and patrols nearby.
  • The space inside the room is limited, but manageable if you’re only bringing a few luggages with you.
  • It is not allowed to smoke anywhere inside the hotel, except for the open space next to the kitchen/dining room.

HOW TO GET THERE
From Incheon Airport
1. Take the Limousine Bus 6001 and get off at Baiton Hotel.
2. Walk left and turn right when you see GS25 convenience store.
3. Walk straight until you see Hwa Shin Hostel signboard.

*If you missed the last bus for 6001, you can also take 6002. The limousine bus is recommended if you have heavy luggages since the metro station in Seoul doesn’t have any elevators. You literally have to carry them up and down the stairs, which is such a hassle especially if you just arrived in Korea and you’re dead tired. It’s cheaper to take the train though, but the difference is not that big. If I remember correctly, I think I paid 10,000 KRW for bus 6002 using T-money card.

If you prefer to take a taxi from Incheon Airport to the hostel, the fee is estimated around 50,000 ~ 70,000 KRW. Print out the address and contact details of your hostel in Korean since not all can speak or read English (even romanized Hangul will be hard for them). If you’re coming from Gimpo Airport and want to use the limousine bus, look for bus 6021.
